The Navajo in Oakland

That fear kept me ‘in the fold’ for many years. Any exploration, reaching out beyond our walls, high as they were, was with great trepidation.  Even after leaving home, the angst was downloaded in my head as an internal critical parent always doing surveillance of all the actions or thoughts I entertained.

A new character, a telepath named Jean Grey, is introduced but in the beginning not as a good girl.  We find out, she is simply trying to find her sister who was also telepathic. Jean and Peter share that unique sense that few others understand and as the movie ends, they connect pledging to not go it alone, at least one other person understands.

Family wise it was an anxious summer.  The thought of loosing a salary while at the same time sending our oldest daughter off to college drove my worries through the roof. Our income was going drastically down, expenses going up.

LEAVING

Just as Abram left Ur, just as Dorothy left Kansas, as our children leave home—we too must go.  Isn’t that what any change is about?  Why do I fear leaving so much?  What is so scary about it?  When I left home at eighteen for college I was venturing into an unknown neither of my parents had experienced.

Second semester of my freshman year I had philosophy.  It was in that class that we read Plato’s Allegory of the Cave which has been one of the most descriptive and powerful things I’ve ever read

ENOUGH

There is a balance in all of life to seek after and yet the very term implies forces are always coming against it—throwing us, pulling us off balance—off center.  The writer of Ecclesiastes was right.  There is a time for everything under the sun.

THE END—er ah

My name, Michael, means ‘who is like God’.  What a claim—a joke.  It feels almost blasphemous to be called by such a name—almost to the point of embarrassment.  Then my middle name, David, means ‘beloved’— a bit easier to swallow.  Nan Merrill (Psalms for Praying: A Invitation to Wholeness) has reminded me for years that God is my beloved and feels that way for all of us—not just we Davids.
